Today is ‘Pay It Forward Day’, a day dedicated to spreading kindness throughout the world. I’m so excited to introduce you to KOYA, a revolutionary app that pairs kindness with connection. We live in a world that craves authentic connection, I believe this app will have a major impact on the way we give back to the world. It’s also a fantastic tool to help us nurture our relationships with the people we love the most. I personally have a lot of friends living abroad and I’m excited to be able to spoil them with a surprise gift.

Hi Courtney, you’re one of the co-founders of KOYA, a revolutionary app that encourages people to spread kindness. Can you tell us a bit more about how this idea came about? What will the app allow us to do?
We came up with the idea last February over dinner. It was our dad’s birthday and when asked what his dreams were for the coming year, he told us that he would like to start a family business. As a serial entrepreneur and life tinkerer with over 40 patents to his name, we were neither surprised nor overwhelmed by his audacious dream. By the end of dinner, the concept for KOYA was planted.
The app will allow you to create personalized messages (KOYAs) discoverable anywhere in the world at any time. KOYAs can have money attached via PayPal.Me. So surprising someone with a coffee, yoga class or tickets to the Eiffel Tower is now totally doable. The best part about it is that your friend won’t be notified until they arrive at the chosen location. We have loads of additional features that we will release in future updates, but we don’t want to spoil all of the fun!

What does KOYA stand for?
KOYA stands for Kindness on Ya. Within our platform, KOYA is used as a verb. For instance, “KOYAs” are created by the giver to be discovered once the receiver visits a place anywhere in the world that the sender knows they are likely to go at some point in the future. It could be a coffee shop, work or home address or even a famous landmark you know they will see on a trip.
Your Beta Version (on iOS) will launch this Sunday on ‘Pay It Forward Day’. This is super exciting. How is the app going to work?
As with anything new, it can feel a bit overwhelming to finally introduce KOYA to the world. Nevertheless, we are absolutely thrilled about the upcoming launch! This Sunday, for our soft launch, the app will be available on iOS for anyone in North America. We will be releasing an Android version a few weeks later and will slowly begin to introduce KOYA globally. You can gain first access to KOYA in your respective regions here.
You don’t need to have the app in order to receive your first message, but you will need to download the app to discover the KOYA created for you.
What would you say to someone downloading your app, what kind of impact do you hope to have on their lives?
With the rise of social media, there is a cost. While we love how social media can be used as a tool for good, we long for deeper connections with friends and family both near and far. KOYA is a kindness platform that enables playful connection. Our hope is that this app brings surprise and joy to your lives.
